PBA, UAAP and NBA betting: reading the odds
How to read decimal odds, spreads and totals on the SCATTER789 sportsbook, with peso examples from PBA, UAAP and NBA games and simple bankroll rules.

Basketball is the sport Filipinos bet on most, from the PBA and collegiate UAAP games to the NBA. This guide explains how sportsbook odds work, using peso examples, so you know exactly what a bet can return before you place it.
Decimal odds in one minute
Most Philippine-facing sportsbooks show decimal odds. Multiply your stake by the odds to get your total return, including your stake.
| Stake | Odds | Total return | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₱500 | 1.50 | ₱750 | ₱250 |
| ₱500 | 1.85 | ₱925 | ₱425 |
| ₱500 | 2.40 | ₱1,200 | ₱700 |
Odds also tell you the implied probability: divide 1 by the odds. Odds of 1.85 imply 1 ÷ 1.85 ≈ 54%. If you think the team's real chance is lower than that, the bet is poor value. The general idea is covered in this overview of odds.
The three main basketball bets
Moneyline
Pick the winner. Example: Team A 1.60, Team B 2.35. ₱1,000 on Team B returns ₱2,350 if they win.
Point spread (handicap)
The favourite gives points, the underdog gets them. Team A −5.5 at 1.90 means Team A must win by 6 or more. Team B +5.5 at 1.90 wins if Team B wins outright or loses by 5 or fewer.
Totals (over/under)
Bet on the combined score. Over 205.5 at 1.90 wins if the teams score 206 or more together.

The bookmaker's margin
Add up the implied probabilities on both sides. For a spread priced 1.90 / 1.90: 52.6% + 52.6% = 105.2%. The extra 5.2% is the margin, the sportsbook's equivalent of the house edge. Lower margins are better for you. Compare it with the slot house edge in RTP explained.
Parlays: big odds, bigger risk
A parlay (accumulator) combines several picks. Odds multiply, but every leg must win. Four legs at 1.90 give about 13.0, so ₱200 could return ₱2,600. Each leg also adds the margin again, so parlays are the bookmaker's most profitable bet. Keep them to small, fun stakes.
Live (in-play) betting
Odds update during the game. Live betting is fast and emotional, which makes it easy to overspend. Decide your maximum in-play stake before tip-off and stick to it.
Bankroll rules for bettors
- Keep a separate betting bankroll, for example ₱5,000 per month.
- Stake 1% to 3% of it per bet: ₱50 to ₱150 on a ₱5,000 bankroll.
- Do not raise stakes to recover losses.
- Record every bet: date, market, odds, stake, result.

Research that actually helps
Check injuries and import (reinforcement) changes, schedule fatigue on back-to-backs, and official stats. International games follow FIBA rules, which differ slightly from the NBA's in game length and fouls. That matters for totals.

Frequently asked questions
What do odds of 2.00 mean?
Even money: ₱100 returns ₱200, a ₱100 profit. Implied probability is 50%.
What happens if a spread bet lands exactly on the number?
With whole-number spreads the bet is a "push" and your stake is returned. Half-point spreads such as 5.5 avoid pushes.
Are parlays a good idea?
They are fun at small stakes but carry a higher margin than single bets. Treat them as entertainment.
